Paris, May 2016 – Efus is pleased to announce that its next “Security, Democracy and Cities” international conference will be held on 15-16-17 November 2017 in Barcelona, in partnership with the city and the Generalitat of Catalonia (autonomous government of Catalonia), in Spain.

This key event in the life of the network will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the association, and will be an occasion to review the activities carried out since the last international conference (Aubervilliers and Saint-Denis, 2012), to draw up the roadmap for the next five years and to produce jointly the next “Security, Democracy and Cities” manifesto. Participants will have an array of debates to choose from, both in plenary sessions and in workshops and roundtables, and will have the opportunity to take part in field visits. Apart from Efus members, the conference will also gather numerous guests: practitioners, academics, researchers, judicial and police stakeholders, representatives of national public bodies and international institutions, as well as political leaders and international media.

In 2012, the Aubervilliers and Saint-Denis conference gathered some 900 attendees representing 200 cities and 40 countries from the five continents.

To select the host city, Efus published a call for applications at the end of 2015. Several cities expressed their interest and the joint candidacy Barcelona-Generalitat was chosen by the Executive Committee during its 17 March meeting in Matosinhos (Portugal).

Efus congratulates Barcelona and the Generalitat and encourages members to take part in the preparation of this major event by contacting the Efus team for any proposal, idea or question.

For their part, the Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat welcomed the fact that the capital of Catalonia will be “the international meeting point of the security world,” in a press release published on 17 March, which also recalls that Efus was created in 1987 upon a proposal by the then-Mayor of Barcelona, Pasqual Maraguall, and the late Mayor of Épinay-sur-Seine, Gilbert Bonnemaison.

Efus members will have a first opportunity to work on the preparation of the conference at the 2016 General Assembly in Setubal, Portugal (27-28 June).
